Landscapes that Rock! - September 22-24, 2023 in Woodstock, VA

I'm excited to have you join me for the Landscapes that Rock workshop in Woodstock, VA!

Below please find some tips for taking reference photos as well as a form to upload your images (up to three options). I'll review them to make sure you'll have success in class!

The class will be working on landscape paintings but if you have taken one of Lisa's workshops before you may also do a people portrait, animal portrait, or still life from your own reference. I do ask that you upload your image for review so you have great success in the workshop!

See you soon!  ~Lisa

Tips for Great Landscape Photos
  • Use a recent model iPhone, Android, or digital camera on a high quality setting so you can see all the fun details
  • Take photos from different vantage points for lots of choices when you crop
  • Do not use the flash on your camera
  • Sunny days are best
  • Look for areas with light and shadow
  • Choose an early or later time of day for interesting light/shadow interplay
  • Avoid silhouettes (backlit images)
  • Take tons of photos so you have options when reviewing them
  • Think about an area of interest, a special section to which you want to guide the viewer's eye (paths, unique trees, color varieties)
  • Have fun with reflections by including water
  • Avoid centering the area of interest
  • Try a number of options for cropping your images to make them more interesting
  • Complicated isn't always best so feel free to keep it more simple
  • Remember the Rule of Thirds
  • Feel free to include a barn, an old truck or a cow or two

Expect a reply from me within a week from receiving your submission. Keep an eye out for my email which is [email protected]

Once you hear back from me you will need to either print your photo on good quality GLOSSY PHOTO PAPER only. You may also use a tablet or phone...and in fact I recommend it!

I can't wait to see your creative ideas!

NOTE: Whether you intend to work on your own landscape image for Day 1 of class or are working on a different subject (only if you have previously taken a class from Lisa) use this form to upload your own images:
